Summer Safe Cycling Ceremony 2009

18th July 2009 turned out to be one of the hottest days of the year, and it was a match for the atmosphere of the Summer Safe Cycling Ceremony 2009.

The event took place at the Amphitheatre of Tai Po Waterfront Park. It was jointly organized by the Road Safety Council and Working Group on Tai Po Road Safety Campaign, and collaborated by Traffic Branch Headquarters.  The officiating guests include Mr. YU Kam-kee Lawrence, Chairman of Road Safety Campaign Committee, Mr. MAN Chen-fai, Chairman of Traffic and Transport Committee (Tai Po District Council), Mr. LAI Tsz-hin, Assistant District Officer of Tai Po, Mr. Mike Demaid-Groves, Chief Superintendent of Traffic Branch Headquarters, Mr. NG Wing-kai, Senior Superintendent of Traffic (New Territories North), Mr. TSOI Wai-fu, Divisional Commander of Tai Po Division, Mr. CHAN Cho-leung, Chairman of Working Group on Tai Po Road Safety Campaign (Tai Po District Council), and Mr. LAU Kwong-hing, Commander of Road Safety Patrol (New Territories Region).

There were over 200 participants turned up to the event, amongst them members from the local cyclists’ associations, Junior Police Call (JPC) and Road Safety Patrol.  After a symbolic kick-off ceremony the event was then followed by introduction of cycling safety equipment by 2002 Asian Games Cycling Medalist Mr. HO Siu-lun Alan and his team, live performance by guest Canto artistes and magic show.  The highlight of the event included an acrobatic cycling show with Mr. YU Sum-yee (IP TP DIV).  The current Champion of Hong Kong Acrobatic Cycling Tournament demonstrated his skills, and most important, do not try his acts at home!

The second part of the ceremony was the roll-out gala of the bicycle parade at the Tolo Bay cycling track, led by Mr. Demaid-Groves. The parade was made up of the members of various cycling associations, JPC and Road Safety Patrol. Publicity activities were conducted along the route, including the handover ceremony of “Bicycle Safety” ambassadorial role from the Road Safety Team (RST) of NTN/T to RST NTS/T.  The handover symbolizes the continuous effort of promoting bicycle safety across the regions.

The event was the prelude to the Summer Safe Cycling Campaign 2009 which commenced on 20th July 2009 and will finish on 2nd August 2009.  It is hoped that the campaign will draw the attention of the public and to increase their awareness of bicycle safety and the proper use of cycling tracks.  During the first week, educational leaflets would be distributed by officers of Regional Road Safety Teams and members of Road Safety Patrol to cyclists at various cycling hotspots throughout the territory.  Stringent enforcement actions would be to be taken in the second week.  It was aimed to reduce traffic accidents involving cyclists by using a three-pronged approach, i.e. publicity, education and enforcement.
