Safe ride for the Elderly Bus Parade - Western

Traffic Branch Headquarters (TBHQ) is assisting in forging road safety partnership programmes between the Road Safety Council (RSC) and the District Councils, to hammer home the three main road safety themes: "Be a 3C Responsible Driver", "Be a Smart Pedestrian" and "Be a Safe Cyclist".

Recently, the RSC worked out a partnership programme with Sham Shui Po (SSPO) District Council targetting elderly pedestrians and with Tai Po and Sha Tin District Councils focussing on safe cycling.

Following the success in SSPO District, the "Elderly Road Safety Bus" was on the move to Western District on October 23 in a partnership programme with Central and Western District Council. The kick-off ceremony for this promotion was held at the Belcher Bay Park, Western, attended by members of the RSC, Central and Western District Council and Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol (HKRSP), as well as senior road safety ambassadors and elderly from the elderly centres in Western District.

The ceremony highlighted road safety messages and traffic rules with a road safety quiz hosted by artiste Tse Suet-sum and comedy performances by the elderly.

Officiating at the ceremony were Road Safety Campaign Committee Chairman, Mr Yu Kam-kee; Senior Deputy Commissioner of HKRSP, Dr Lam Chi-kit; Central and Western District Council Chairman, Mr Chan Tak-chor; Acting Deputy Commissioner (Planning and Training) of HKRSP, Dr Liu Kai-ming; TBHQ Chief Superintendent Mike Demaid-Groves; TBHQ Senior Superintendent Shirley Chu; Traffic Hong Kong Island Senior Superintendent Wise Choy, and Western Division Acting Divisional Commander Kwok Wing-tak.

Speaking at the event, Mr Yu emphasised the significance of pedestrian safety. "Pedestrians make up about 50 per cent of the traffic accident fatalities in the first nine months of this year, and elderly pedestrians accounted for over 60 per cent of the pedestrians killed. The purpose of this event is to remind the elderly to be smart pedestrians, and avoid getting hurt in traffic accidents," he noted.
