Safe Ride for the Elderly Bus Parade – Yuen Long

Traffic Branch Headquarters (TBHQ) engages the community to promote road safety, by working with the Road Safety Council (RSC) and District Councils to develop road safety programmes.  Elderly pedestrians make up 60% of all pedestrian fatalities and to address the issue, TBHQ and the RSC initiated a special programme to bring road safety messages to elderly pedestrians across the territory.

Following successful events in March 2009 in Sham Shui Po where the number of fatalities fell from 19 in 2008 to 9 in 2009, and the subsequent events in Western Districts and Kwun Tong in October 2009 and March 2010, TBHQ, the Road Safety Council, Yuen Long District Council and the Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol (HKRSP) kicked-off the 2010 publicity campaign on Friday 18 June 2010 in Yuen Long.  With the assistance of elderly volunteers helping the elderly community, the slogan – Love Yourself, Love Your Family, Be a Smart Pedestrian – echoed, reminding the elderly to use proper road crossing facilities and to follow the traffic rules.  This will not only protect themselves from traffic injury, but will also relieve their family members from worrying about their safety.

The event was officiated by Mr. YU Kam-kee, Lawrence BBS JP, Chairman of the Road Safety Campaign Committee; Mr. LEUNG Che-cheung MH JP, the Chairman of Yuen Long District Council; Mr. S.H. VERRALLS, Chief Superintendent TBHQ; and Mr. Paul LAU, Senior Assistant Commissioner of HKRSP (New Territories North Region) and party.

It was a fun-packed and educational event: lion dance, road safety quiz, singing performance by artiste Ms. LAM Chi-mei and footdrill by local elderlies.  They were aimed to convey road safety messages such as the importance of compliance with traffic rules and road safety tips in preventing traffic accidents in a relaxing manner.  After a symbolic kick-off ceremony at the Yuen Long Town Hall, all guests and “Elderly Road Safety Ambassadors” boarded the “Elderly Road Safety Bus” and travelled to popular pedestrian spots to hand out leaflets and souvenirs to the local elderly population.  Despite the hot and humid weather, the guests and ambassadors were greeted and supported by massive passionate crowds.  The guests finally returned to Yuen Long Town Hall to conclude the event.

The event had reinforced loud and clear road safety messages to the elderly and other road users on crossing roads safely.  It was hoped that the participants and the media would disseminate the road safety message to other elderly population so as to reduce the number of traffic accidents involving this age group.  During the event, Mr. YU Kam-kee, Lawrence BBS JP, emphasised to local residents, in particular the elderly – Love Yourself, Love Your family, Be a Smart Pedestrian.

The ceremony also kicked-off of the territory-wide pedestrian road safety campaign, which is held between 18 June and 1 July.  During the first week, educational leaflets would be distributed to pedestrians at popular spots throughout the territory with a view to enhancing public awareness on road safety.  Stringent enforcement actions would be taken in the second week and any time of the campaign for blatant offence.
