RSC launches Elderly Pedestrian Safety Day
Among the road users in Hong Kong, elderly pedestrians are the most vulnerable group. In view of this, Road Safety Council (RSC) held the "Road Safety Council Annual Ceremony 2011 cum Elderly Pedestrian Safety Day" in Tsuen Wan on November 20.
The RSC Chairman, Deputy Commissioner (Operations) Tang Kam-moon, Xavier; Deputy Commissioner for Transport, Mr Ching Kam-cheong; and Chairman of Road Safety Campaign Committee, Dr Eric Cheng, officiated at the ceremony and presented awards to winners of RSC's Elderly Pedestrian Safety Photo Competition.
The competition, held between July and September this year, invited public to take photos with elderly pedestrian safety as a theme, in a bid to raise public awareness of safety of elderly pedestrians. Over 600 entries of photos were received and over 210 000 visits to the competition website were recorded.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Tang said elderly pedestrian safety would remain a focal point of attention for RSC, which had already organised a series of activities to raise public awareness of elderly pedestrian safety. He called on the public to make a concerted effort for the vision of "Zero accidents on the road, Hong Kong's goal".
Programmes of the event conveyed road safety messages with chitchat shows and performances by local artistes, Lo Hoi-pang, G.E.M. and Jade Kwan, as well as games with the audience.
After the ceremony, police officers and members of the Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol handed out publicity leaflet and souvenirs to the public at various locations.
By launching the Elderly Pedestrian Safety Day, RSC hopes to promote the message: "Love Yourself and Love Your Family, Be a Smart Pedestrian". It will organise more educational and publicity activities on elderly pedestrian safety in the coming months.
