Joint effort to make cycling safe

Road Safety Council and the Traffic Branch Headquarters, in partnership with the 18 District Councils, opened a safe cycling campaign in Po Kong Village Road Park, Diamond Hill, on September 15. Elsewhere in Hong Kong, Regional Road Safety Teams and the Road Safety Patrol handed out publicity leaflets and souvenirs to the public after the opening ceremony.

Road Safety Campaign Committee Chairman, Dr Eric Cheng; Traffic Branch Acting Chief Superintendent Angela Ng; Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol Commissioner, Mr Robert Chui; and chairpersons and members of the traffic and transport committees of the 18 District Councils officiated at the ceremony.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Cheng emphasised: "To enjoy cycling in a safe manner, people should wear suitable protective gear, realise their own riding skills, pay attention to traffic conditions and understand traffic law."

During the ceremony, members of Civil Aid Service gave a demonstration of artistic cycling while games on traffic signs and road markings disseminated messages of cycling safety. Local artistes also pitched in for safe cycling by taking part in a chitchat show and performances with the participants.

"Although the number of cyclists killed in the first eight months of this year has dropped to six from 10 in the same period of last year, a single accident is too many. I hope everybody would share the message of cycling safety with family members and friends to achieve Hong Kong's goal: 'Zero Accidents on the Road'," said Acting CSP Ng.
