Bus parade brings road safety message to the elderly
As the elderly accounted for a considerable proportion number of casualties in traffic accidents in recent years, “Elderly Road Safety Campaign Kick-off Ceremony cum Bus Parade in Yuen Long 2013” was jointly organized by Road Safety Council, Traffic Branch Headquarters, Traffic New Territories North, Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol and Yuen Long District Council on 24th May 2013 at Yuen Long Theatre to promote Pedestrian and Cycling Safety with a view to reminding the elderly to use road crossing facilities to cross the road and to adhere to traffic rules when cycling.
This campaign was officiated by Dr Eric CHENG, Chairman of the Road Safety Campaign Committee, Mr MAK Chun-yu, Yuen Long District Officer, Mr CHUI Chi-yan, Commissioner of the Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol, Mr S.H. VERRALLS, Chief Superintendent of Police Traffic Branch Headquarters, Mr CHU Hon-keung, Senior Superintendent of Police Traffic New Territories North, Mr WONG Yiu-ming, Superintendent of Police, Divisional Commander of Yuen Long Division, Mr Michael LUK, Chairman of Traffic & Transport Committee of Yuen Long District Council, Mr LAI Tin-cheung, Deputy Regional Commander of the Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol (New Territories North), Ms CHAN Hiu-kei and Ms TSE Yuet-sum, Promotion Officers of the Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol. About 1 000 senior citizens and a number of representatives of minor ethnic groups living in Yuen Long area attended the activity to show their supports to the event. In the ceremony, the Road Safety Council made use of an educational drama, singing performance and the road safety quiz to promote messages of the cycling and pedestrian rules. The event was well participated by the audiences.
After the ceremony, the officiating guests and the elderly road safety ambassadors boarded on the bus to conduct a bus parade to promote road safety messages to all the elderly in Yuen Long.
