Publicity and Campaigns

The Police and the Road Safety Council held three large-scale publicity campaigns to promote cycling safety

In order to further promote safe cycling, the Hong Kong Police Force and the Road Safety Council (RSC) have conducted three large-scale publicity campaigns on 6th July. These campaigns were the “Summer Safe Cycling cum Safe Cycling Ambassadors Appointment Ceremony” at Tai Po Waterfront Park Amphitheatre, the “Regional Road Safety Publicity Campaign” at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre and the “Safe and Joyful Crossing in Hong Kong Carnival cum Cycling Safety Kick Off Ceremony” at King Lam Estate, Tseung Kwan O.

Cycling safety is one of the prime concerns of the Police and the RSC. Police figures showed that there were 986 traffic accidents involving bicycles, resulting in 1 025 casualties during the first five months in 2013. The figures represented an increase of 2 per cent and 3 per cent respectively when compared with the same period in 2012. 5 people were killed in traffic accidents involving bicycles.

2013 marks the 40th Anniversary of the RSC. In order to enhance the publicity efforts, the Police and the RSC will set a promotion theme for each month from July to October. July will be the thematic month for promoting cycling safety. The above activities held on 6th July aim at enhancing the cyclists’ awareness on road safety and emphasizing the importance of using personal protective equipment when cycling. Cyclists are also reminded that they are subject to the Road Traffic Ordinance and are obliged to obey all traffic laws, which apply to drivers.

During these activities, officers of the Police Road Safety Teams and members of the Road Safety Patrol have distributed leaflets and souvenirs across the territory to amplify the promotion effectiveness.
