Road Safety Advice to Cyclists

Riding

Follow the Road Traffic Ordinance. Offenders can be prosecuted under the Road Traffic Ordinance.

  • Traffic regulations apply to all cyclists
  • Do not ride on pavements
  • Obey all traffic lights and signs and road markings
Think ahead. Anticipate drivers' actions so you can respond positively.

Make known to other road users what is your intended next move. Always look and signal before you move off, turn or stop.
Do not weave in traffic.
Be considerate and courteous.
Be extremely careful when overtaking stationary vehicles/parked vehicles/moving vehicles.
Do not pass a bus on the left at a bus stop.
Ride in single file except when overtaking.
Never overtake on the left.
Always keep both hands on the handle bars unless you are signalling.
Always keep both feet on the pedals.
Do not hold onto a vehicle or tow another cyclists or other vehicle.
Do not lead an animal.
Do not ride about with audio equipment at a high level noise. It is dangerous to yourself and is a nuisance to others.
Always check over your shoulder before changing direction.
Pedestrian Crossings
Do not weave through pedestrians or try to force your way through.
Always stop at 'Green man' crossings.
Get off your cycle and wheel your cycle along when you cross the pedestrian crossings.
Stopping

Stopping must be done carefully and gradually.
Think of where you wish to stop. Pay particular attention to vehicles behind, check over your right shoulder for any traffic.

Signal as an advance indication. However, if you have to stop in emergency situation, you may not be able to do so.
On wet/slippery roads, it will take you much longer to stop, at least twice the normal stopping distances.
