Road Safety Guard comes on stream

Breaking new ground this year, the Road Safety Council (RSC), in collaboration with Traffic Branch Headquarters (TBHQ), has used the Internet to launch the "Road Safety Guard" to promote anti-drink and anti-drug driving, elderly pedestrian safety and safe cycling.

On November 7, the 2010 Road Safety Annual Launching Ceremony cum Award Presentation for Road Safety Message Design Competition was held at Park Central Shopping Centre, Tseung Kwan O. Officiating at the ceremony were RSC Chairman and Deputy Commissioner (Operations), Mr Tsang Wai-hung; Deputy Commissioner for Transport, Mr Ching Kam-cheong; and Chairman of Road Safety Campaign Committee, Mr Lawrence Yu Kam-kee. During the ceremony, winners of the Road Safety Message Design Competition were presented with awards.

During the competition held between July and mid-October, members of the public submitted over 500 entries on posters and promotional videos on the above themes.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Tsang praised the community for supporting road safety promotion, which had brought the number of fatal traffic accidents in 2009 to the lowest since 1958. He believed the positive image of the Road Safety Guard would help promote road safety to the community, and sustain public awareness of road safety for Hong Kong's road safety vision: "Zero Accidents on the Road".

Programmes of the event were most entertaining and conveyed road safety messages through a chit-chat show and live performances by local artistes Jade Kwan and Wong Yat-wah, games with the audience, and "hip-hop" dance to the tunes of the Road Safety Vision song by "N.G.", a group formed by university students.

In addition, Mr Ching led over 20 public transport trade representatives to make a pledge on road safety.

Another highlight of the event was the appointment of Jade Kwan as a Road Safety Ambassador to help RSC promote road safety.

Although the Road Safety Message Design Competition is over, it nevertheless only marks the beginning of the Road Safety Guard's mission, who will spread the message: "To promote road safety, both you and I have to pitch in".
