Bus parade brings road safety message to the elderly
As the elderly accounted for a considerable proportion of the number of casualties of traffic accidents in recent years, “Elderly Road Safety Campaign Kick-off Ceremony cum Bus Parade in Yuen Long” was jointly organized by RSC, TBHQ, T NTN, HKRSP and YLDC on 2 May at Yuen Long Theatre to promote “Be careful when cycling and be attentive when crossing the road” with a view to reminding the elderly to use crossing facilities to cross the road and to adhere to traffic rules when cycling.
The activity was officiated by Dr. Eric CHENG, Chairman of RSCC, Mr. LEUNG Che-cheung, Chairman of YLDC, Mr. George TSOI, ADO of YLDO, Mr. S.H. VERRALLS, CSP T, Mr. NG Wing-kai, SSP T NTN, Mr. Alexander YEONG, Commander of YL District, Mr. Michael LUK, Chairman of T&T Committee of YLDC, Mr. Paul LAU, Senior Commissioner of HKRSP, Mr. LAM Chi-mei, Promotion Officer and Mr. HO Siu-lun, cycling coach of the Hong Kong Triathlon Squad. About 1 000 senior citizens, including 8 Yuen Long resident representatives from minor ethnic groups, attended the activity. They enjoyed the presentation of cycling safety techniques and cycling safety gear and the dancing, drama and Cantonese Opera performances. The road safety quiz was very actively participated.
After the ceremony, the officiating guests and the elderly road safety ambassadors boarded the bus to conduct a bus parade in Yuen Long. The bus parade was aimed at promoting road safety message among the elderly and other road users and it was hoped that the message could be brought to the elderly of other districts through the participants and the media.
