Expressways

Most expressways are multi-lane (3 or more) carriageway with shoulders and carry traffic at a higher speed. Therefore, drivers need to be more alert in order to cope with any road hazards.

Expressways

  • Most expressways are under the Route Numbering System with associated exit
number. Checking the route and exit numbers before journey reduces the risk of
    finding the way when drive.
  • Keep to the nearside lane of an expressway unless overtaking, and overtake only at
the offside of the other vehicle.
  • When driving on the nearside lane, there may be other drivers trying to merge in from
the slip road and sometimes it is difficult to find a safe space, change to the center lane
or adjust speed to let others merge in with enough safety margins.
  • Medium goods vehicles, heavy goods vehicles and buses are prohibited from using
the offside lane of an expressway where the carriageway has three or more traffic
    lanes available.
  • When leaving an expressway, use the speedometer to check if the speed is within
legal limit. Do not rely on intuition. After staying on the expressway for a while, the
actual speed traveling is usually "higher" than that estimated by the driver thus
    affecting driving safety.
