Road Safety Advice to Cyclists

Mutual Understanding

  • Motorists should understand that:

    • Cyclists are more vulnerable than motorists - drivers should exercise greater care and attention on road.
    • Be considerate.
    • Be extremely careful at road junctions and roundabouts when cars change speed, position and directions. Slow down and drive smoothly.
    • Stay alert. There may be sudden movements by cyclists.
    • Signal in advance correctly: particularly at roundabouts and every time you pass a cyclist.
    • Give cyclists sufficient space - at least half a car's width.
    • Be patient.
    • Use dipped headlamps.
    • Watch for cyclists on the nearside when you turn left.
    • Expect speed from bicycles.
  • Cyclists should also understand that :

    • Motorists usually travel faster than cyclists. They have less time to react.
    • Motorists may not always see the presence of cyclists on the road or hear their warning bell.
    • Motorists do not always understand the road conditions, problems for cyclists, e.g. potholes, stones on the road, or slippery road markings and tram tracks.
    • Motorists may not have the patience for cyclists
  • Both motorists and cyclists must share a responsibility to understand each other's needs and to react positively in order to have a safe and pleasant journey.
