Road Safety Advice to Cyclists
Mutual Understanding
- Motorists should understand that:
- Cyclists are more vulnerable than motorists - drivers should exercise greater care and attention on road.
- Be considerate.
- Be extremely careful at road junctions and roundabouts when cars change speed, position and directions. Slow down and drive smoothly.
- Stay alert. There may be sudden movements by cyclists.
- Signal in advance correctly: particularly at roundabouts and every time you pass a cyclist.
- Give cyclists sufficient space - at least half a car's width.
- Be patient.
- Use dipped headlamps.
- Watch for cyclists on the nearside when you turn left.
- Expect speed from bicycles.
- Cyclists should also understand that :
- Motorists usually travel faster than cyclists. They have less time to react.
- Motorists may not always see the presence of cyclists on the road or hear their warning bell.
- Motorists do not always understand the road conditions, problems for cyclists, e.g. potholes, stones on the road, or slippery road markings and tram tracks.
- Motorists may not have the patience for cyclists
- Both motorists and cyclists must share a responsibility to understand each other's needs and to react positively in order to have a safe and pleasant journey.
